The Percy Arms sits slightly elevated above the roadside as you drive through Chatton, a small village a few miles east of Wooler. It's a traditional pub and hotel with rooms, a bar serving real ales, and a restaurant menu leaning on locally sourced food and Northumberland coast seafood.

In summer there's a little garden out front, and the pub is popular as a stop for people exploring the surrounding villages, castles and coastline.

Good to know

The pub is dog friendly, so Meg is welcome. There's free on-site parking, and the pub also offers overnight rooms if you fancy staying rather than just passing through.

Our Time at The Percy Arms

We'd driven past The Percy Arms more times than we can count, always saying we should try it sometime. On our way home from the Glendale Show, sometime finally arrived.

We had drinks and a light lunch — a ham and cheese toastie each and a shared pot of fries — for around £30.

It was fine. The staff were friendly, the food was reasonably tasty and everything was clean. There was nothing wrong with it, but nothing that grabbed us either. The toastie could have done with a proper grilling, and given the name, we felt the pub could lean harder into its Northumbrian history — a few old photographs or well-chosen artefacts would go a long way towards giving it more personality.

Would we go back for a pint in the garden with Meg on a sunny afternoon? Absolutely. Would we rush back specifically for lunch? Probably not for a while.
