The Joiners Arms — High Newton-by-the-Sea

Another favourite of ours, particularly when Sunday lunch is calling.

The Joiners Arms describes itself as a five-star luxury village pub and boutique inn. We’ve never stayed — so we’ll leave the rooms for someone else to judge — but we’ve eaten here plenty of times, and the pub itself is lovely.

It’s cosy without feeling stuffy, usually busy enough to have a good buzz about it, and there’s seating both inside and out. On a sunny Northumberland afternoon, the outside tables are hard to beat.

But we come for the food. The Sunday lunches are excellent: properly cooked, generous portions and reasonably priced for the quality. The sort of plate that arrives and immediately makes you glad you didn’t have that extra slice of toast at breakfast.

It always seems popular, and we can understand why. Good food, a warm atmosphere and that slightly special Sunday afternoon in a country pub feeling.
