Cricket below Bamburgh Castle

Beneath the Castle

We're not really sports fans, but every summer we find ourselves back here.

"The best places aren't always the busiest. Sometimes they're simply the ones where time seems to slow down."

A blanket on the grass. Coffee if it's still morning, ice cream if it's not. Flynn asleep without a care in the world, while Meg watches every cricket ball with heroic determination, somehow resisting the urge to chase it onto the pitch.

The smell of freshly cut grass drifts across the square, and every now and then comes that unmistakable crack of willow on leather. It's a sound that seems to belong to another England—one that still finds time for long afternoons and unhurried conversations.

Above it all, Bamburgh Castle keeps its quiet watch from the cliffs, changing colour as the afternoon light softens across the stone. Players come and go, spectators wander past, and hours disappear almost unnoticed.

It's not somewhere we'd travelled hundreds of miles to see.

It's simply one of those little moments that reminds us why we love Northumberland so much.

For an hour or two, with the sun on your face and nowhere else you need to be, the world feels wonderfully uncomplicated.
